What is the Purpose of a Modeling Portfolio, or “Book?”

A modeling portfolio is a collection of images bound in a black, zippered 9”x12” or 11”x14” book.  (Don’t make the rookie-mistake of buying a photo album!)  The purpose is to  showcase your different looks for potential clients.  If you are represented by an agency, they may direct a specific layout, but here are 5 Keys that will help you put a great portfolio together:

1.  Quality over Quantity.

You need to showcase your very best photographs in your modeling portfolio.  If you are just starting out, you will want to work with a seasoned photographer who understands fashion and commercial work.  Having three or four stunning photographs will leave a more distinct impression on the viewer than a book full of low-quality, “cute” snapshots.

2.  Show versatility in your modeling portfolio.

Use images with different outfits, backgrounds, and lighting to show versatility.  If possible, use photographs that are taken at different angles, and include at least one tight headshot, one three-quarter shot (thighs up), and one full-body (head-to-shoes) shot.

3.  Include at least one black and white image.

Be sure that it’s crisp and has good contrast between the light and shadow areas.  These can really stand out and leave an impact on the client.

4.  Use accessories wisely.

Great hats and scarves can add color and interest to your photographs in your modeling portfolio, but remember that you are selling yourself, as well as your ability to work the accessories.  Be watchful of images where the accessories block your eyes, or distract from the overall message of the image.  A super-cute handbag needs some “breathing room” around it, so that it doesn’t end up looking like a lump coming out of your side!

Children change quickly, so you should always keep current photographs in your modeling portfolio.

5.  Keep your images current.

Children, especially, change so quickly.  Clients want to be assured that the person in the portfolio is the same person that will be representing them.  Not someone 10 years older.  Tear sheets from recent work are great additions to your modeling portfolio.
